5 Amazing No-Prep Structured Literacy Centers For 2nd Grade

If you’re anything like me, you love providing differentiated support in your literacy centers. In my opinion, it’s a non-negotiable for student success. So today I’m sharing my top 5 favorite structured literacy centers for 2nd grade!

I’ve been following (and loving!) the UFLI Foundations program since 2022, but I quickly realized that there was a huge need for differentiated supplemental activities. So, I dedicated the past few years to researching, creating, and testing structured literacy activities that follow the UFLI scope and sequence.

The best part is, anyone can use these resources in their classroom whether you use UFLI or not. They’re the perfect supplement to any phonics program! And it’s important to note that these activities are great for other grade levels, too – it just depends on which skills your students have mastered. I am so passionate about meeting students where they are and not just handing them a resource that they should be able to do.

Let’s check out some of my absolute favorite structured literacy activities!

Top 5 Structured Literacy Centers for 2nd Grade:

  1. Decode and Color
  2. Sentence Scramble
  3. Write the Room – Decodable Sentences
  4. Phonics Word Sorts
  5. Match and Map

1. Decode and Color

This activity is a fun and meaningful way to build phonics fluency. Students will encode (write) each word to find the color code. Then, they will decode (read) to find the word on the picture to color it correctly.

Each lesson includes worksheets for different phonics skills. Such a fun way to combine learning with coloring!

2. Sentence Scramble

Research shows that students need regular review and practice using phonics skills authentically. Sentence scrambles are a fabulous activity to get your students reading and writing!

I love this activity for literacy centers because the concepts spiral, so your students will get lots of practice reading and writing independently.

3. Write the Room – Decodable Sentences

This is a great phonics activity to get the kiddos up and moving. Students get a clipboard and walk around the room to find the sentences. They write the sentences on their paper (encoding), read the sentences (decoding), and then draw a picture or match one of the images provided (comprehension).

This activity not only supports orthographic mapping, but also helps students feel successful and confident as readers!

4. Phonics Word Sorts

One of the most powerful word study techniques is the word sort, which actively engages students in exploring, comparing, and categorizing word patterns and relationships. Word sorts can be done as fun, hands-on activities.

Students will map out each word under the picture, cut out each picture/word card, and sort the words into the columns using the word sorting rule. An excellent activity for literacy centers.

5. Match and Map

This fun, hands-on phonics activity is one of my students’ favorites. First, they match the picture to each word on the page. Then, they encode (write) the word by mapping it and printing it.

I created this activity specifically for the more difficult phonics skills – I noticed my students were needing a lot more practice reading and writing the words. This activity is perfect for additional reinforcement in a literacy center!

Organization Tip

If you’re just starting out with a Science of Reading curriculum, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed with all of the new resources. One way I organize my structured literacy centers for 2nd grade is with this simple chart.

I always have my class of students divided into groups based on their literacy skills (read this post for a full explanation of how I use assessment data to determine my student groups). So I use this chart to organize which students are in which group, what UFLI lesson they’re on, and which supplemental activities they will be working on that week.

Here’s an example:

Final Thoughts

No matter what phonics program you’re following, differentiated supplemental activities are the key to success. I’ve seen these activities work wonders for my own students (and now 10,000+ others). I know you’ll love these structured literacy centers for 2nd grade!
